Combining specialist knowledge, evidence-based tools, and a compassionate approach, we provide clear, comprehensive assessments that help families understand and support their child’s unique needs.

Common Signs of ADHD in Children

ADHD presents differently in every individual. While many children with ADHD share common traits, these experiences vary widely and are often shaped by gender, environment and life stage. Recognising these patterns can help people better understand themselves and access the right support.

High energy levels and a strong drive to stay active or stimulated
Deep focus on topics, games, or activities that capture their interest
May find it hard to engage with tasks that feel repetitive or unstimulating
Can appear inattentive, often processing multiple thoughts or ideas at once
Preference for movement, talking, or fidgeting while concentrating
Strong emotional responses. Excitement, frustration, or disappointment can feel intense
May interrupt or act impulsively when enthusiastic
Easily distracted by external sounds or sights in busy environments
Finds it difficult to wind down or switch between tasks
May need extra time or support to organise belongings and schoolwork
Sensitive to perceived criticism or rejection, sometimes leading to withdrawal or frustration

What Happens in a Child ADHD Assessment?

Our child ADHD assessments are designed to help families understand their child’s attention, behaviour, and learning profile. Every stage is delivered by experienced Neurodevelopmental Assessors following NHS standards and adhering to NICE guidelines.

1

Pre-assessment & triage

We begin by gathering background information to confirm whether an ADHD assessment is appropriate and to ensure the process is tailored to your child’s needs.
2

Questionnaires

You and a chosen informant (such as a teacher or caregiver) will complete questionnaires exploring your child’s developmental history, attention patterns, and day-to-day behaviours.
3

Supporting information

We may request additional documents, such as school reports, previous assessments, or medical notes, to help build a complete picture of your child’s strengths and challenges.
4

Diagnostic interview

A structured diagnostic interview lasting approximately 1½ hours is conducted online or in person with a qualified assessor. Both the child and their parent or guardian should be present. The session explores focus, organisation, impulsivity, and emotional regulation across home and school environments.
5

Diagnostic report

A detailed clinical report is prepared by our team and finalised by a Psychiatrist with extensive experience and training in ADHD and autism.
6

Post-diagnostic feedback

You’ll be invited to a feedback session to review your child’s results, understand the findings, and receive personalised recommendations for support at home and school. This may include guidance around educational adjustments, therapeutic support, or behavioural strategies to promote long-term wellbeing.

Child ADHD Assessment FAQs

Who are child ADHD assessments for?
Our ADHD assessments are designed for children aged six and above who may show signs such as difficulty focusing, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or challenges with organisation and emotional regulation. Assessments help families gain clarity, understanding, and a plan for appropriate support.
Are appointments available online or in person?
Our private assessments can take place online or in person at our Kent and Cheltenham clinics, giving families flexibility and choice.
What happens during a child’s ADHD assessment?
Assessments are carried out by experienced Neurodevelopmental Assessors using evidence-based tools such as the DIVA or other recognised diagnostic interviews, alongside input from parents, teachers, and caregivers. The process is child-centred and supportive, aiming to build a clear picture of your child’s strengths, challenges, and needs.

Each report is then clinically reviewed and signed off by a Psychiatrist, ensuring diagnostic accuracy and clinical oversight. Following this, a diagnostic outcome meeting is held with a qualified therapist (Psychiatrist, Pharmacist, or GP) to discuss the results, confirm the diagnosis, and outline next steps for support.
How do you account for differences in how ADHD presents in boys and girls?
Our team receives ongoing training in recognising how ADHD can look different across genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds. Girls with ADHD, for example, may show more inattentive traits, masking behaviours, or emotional sensitivity rather than overt hyperactivity. RTN’s approach ensures these differences are recognised so that every child is assessed fairly and accurately.
How soon can my child start their assessment?
Once you book a private assessment, your child’s process can begin within 24 hours. We don’t commit to fixed completion timeframes, as progress depends on completing pre-assessment forms and appointments.
What does “adheres to NICE guidelines” mean?
It means our team follows the standards recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for diagnosing ADHD in children. This ensures every assessment meets nationally recognised standards of safety and quality.
What support is available after diagnosis?
You’ll receive a detailed report outlining recommendations for next steps, including strategies for home and school.
Can I pay for my child’s assessment in installments?
Yes. Flexible payment options are available, allowing you to spread the cost of your child’s assessment.
