Expert Adult Autism Assessments You Can Trust

Our adult autism assessments are available online across the UK or in person at our Kent and Cheltenham clinics, adhering to NHS and NICE guidelines. Our experts receive ongoing training to understand how autism presents across different genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds. Combining specialist knowledge, evidence-based tools, and a person-centred approach, we deliver clear, comprehensive assessments that reflect each individual’s unique profile.

Common Signs of Autism in Adults

Autism presents differently in everyone. Many autistic adults share traits, but these experiences vary widely and can be shaped by a wide range of factors. Recognising these patterns can help people better understand themselves and access the right support.

Unique communication style or preference for direct, honest conversation
Strong need for routine or predictability
May have a passion for special interests
Heightened sensitivity to sensory input such as sounds, lights, textures or smells
Feeling socially drained or misunderstood in certain settings
Tendency to take things literally, preferring clear, direct language
Feeling “different” or misunderstood throughout life
May have repetitive behaviours or physical movements
Using strategies (often called masking) to manage social expectations

What Happens in an Adult Autism Assessment?

Our adult autism assessments are designed to provide a clear, supportive understanding of your experiences and traits. Each stage is carried out by experienced clinicians and adheres to NHS and NICE standards.

1

Pre-assessment & triage

We start by collecting background information to confirm whether an autism assessment is appropriate and to ensure the process is tailored to your needs.
2

Questionnaires

You and a chosen informant (such as a partner, family member, or close friend) will complete questionnaires exploring your developmental history, characteristics, and day-to-day behaviours.
3

Supporting information

If available, additional documents such as educational or occupational reports may be requested to help build a full understanding of your profile.
4

Diagnostic interview

You’ll take part in a structured diagnostic interview lasting approximately 1½ hours, conducted online or in person with a qualified assessor. The session explores communication style, social interaction, sensory processing, and behavioural patterns.
5

Diagnostic report

Following your assessment, a detailed report is prepared by our team and finalised by a HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience and training in autism.
6

Post-diagnostic feedback

You’ll be invited to a follow-up session to review your results, understand your diagnosis, and receive personalised guidance on recommended next steps, including talking therapy, workplace adjustments, or additional support options.

Support for Autism in Adults

RTN Mental Health offers follow-up recommendations post-diagnosis and ongoing support for autistic adults, including talking therapies. Our therapists help clients manage anxiety, develop coping skills, and build confidence for everyday life.

Adult Autism Assessment FAQs

Who can have an adult autism assessment with RTN?
Our adult autism assessments are designed for individuals aged 18 and over who may experience social, communication, or sensory differences, or who suspect they may be autistic. You can self-refer for a private assessment.
Are assessments available online?
Yes. Assessments are delivered online for accessibility and convenience. Private assessments can take place online or in person at our Kent and Cheltenham clinics.
What happens during an autism assessment?
Assessments are led by experienced Neurodevelopmental Assessors using gold-standard diagnostic tools such as the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, alongside a detailed clinical interview. The process is collaborative, person-centred, and designed to help you feel comfortable, understood, and supported at every stage.
Do you understand how autism presents differently across genders?
Yes. Our Neurodevelopmental Assessors receive ongoing training to recognise how autism can present differently across genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds. Many traditional diagnostic tools were developed around male traits, meaning autism in women and girls can sometimes be missed or misunderstood. RTN’s clinicians are trained to look beyond standard checklists to ensure every assessment reflects the individual’s unique presentation.
How soon can I start my assessment?
Once you book a private assessment, your process can begin within 24 hours. We don’t commit to fixed completion timeframes, as progress depends on completing pre-assessment forms and appointments.
What does “adheres to NICE guidelines” mean?
It means our experts follow the standards set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for autism diagnosis in adults. This ensures your assessment meets the same quality and clinical standards used in NHS services.
What support is available after diagnosis?
You’ll receive a detailed report with clear recommendations for next steps, including therapy, workplace support, or community resources. You can also access ongoing help through RTN Therapies, which provides tailored talking therapies and emotional regulation support for autistic adults.
Can I pay for my assessment in installments?
Yes. Flexible payment options are available, allowing you to spread the cost of your assessment.
