How CBT for autism works at RTN Mental Health

Our CBT for autism follows a step-by-step process designed to feel comfortable, structured, and supportive at every stage. Each session builds on the last, helping you understand patterns in thinking and emotion while developing tools that make everyday life more manageable.

1

Initial screening

We start with your goals, background, and preferred way of working to confirm whether CBT for autism is the most suitable approach, and to identify any adjustments that will make therapy easier to engage with.
2

Understanding your needs

Your therapist takes time to explore your experiences, communication style, and environment, recognising the sensory or social factors that might affect your wellbeing.
3

Personalised CBT plan

We’ll build a structured, predictable therapy plan based on your goals. Sessions use visual support, step-by-step strategies, and repetition to strengthen learning and build confidence over time.
4

Therapy sessions

Across regular online sessions, you’ll learn how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours connect and how to apply CBT techniques in real situations. Each session includes practical tools, coping strategies, and reflection activities tailored to your needs.
5

Ongoing support

After your 6 or 12-session CBT programme, we’ll review your progress and offer continued support. That might include refresher sessions and therapy reviews.

CBT for Autism FAQs

Is CBT effective for autistic people?
Yes. CBT for autism at RTN Mental Health is adapted to autistic thinking and communication styles. It uses structured, practical techniques that help you manage anxiety, build emotional understanding, and improve daily coping skills.
How is CBT adapted for autism?
Sessions are predictable, visual, and clear. Therapists adjust communication, pacing, and examples to match your learning style and sensory needs, so therapy feels comfortable and easy to follow.
What if I’ve tried CBT before and it didn’t help?
Many autistic people find standard CBT difficult because it isn’t always adapted to how they think or communicate. At RTN Mental Health, our CBT for autism is designed differently: predictable, visual, and structured to suit your processing and sensory needs. We take time to build trust, use clear language, and adapt each session so therapy feels comfortable and relevant to your life.

Clients can choose a programme consisting of 6 or 12 sessions. Each session lasts 45–60 minutes and includes between-session activities to help you practise new skills.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book private cognitive behavioural therapy directly with RTN Mental Health and begin within weeks.
Do you offer online and in-person sessions?
To ensure our CBT services are available from anywhere, we deliver them all online.
