Common Signs of ADHD

Common Signs of ADHD

ADHD presents differently in every individual. While many children and adults with ADHD share common traits, these experiences vary widely and are often shaped by environment, gender, and life stage. Recognising these patterns can help people better understand themselves and access the right support.

What Happens in an ADHD Assessment?

Our ADHD assessments for children and adults are designed to provide clear, evidence-based insight into attention, focus, and behaviour. Each stage is led by experienced Neurodevelopmental Assessors and adheres to NHS standards and NICE guidelines.

1

Pre-assessment & triage

We begin by collecting background information to confirm whether an ADHD assessment is appropriate and to ensure the process meets your needs.
2

Questionnaires

You and a chosen informant (such as a parent, partner, or teacher) will complete questionnaires exploring developmental history, attention patterns, and day-to-day behaviours.
3

Supporting information

Our team may request additional documents, such as school reports, previous assessments, or medical notes, to provide a complete understanding of your or your child’s presentation.
4

Diagnostic interview

Structured interviews are conducted online or in person:
  • For adults: a single 1½-hour interview with an assessor.
  • For children:a single 1½-hour interview involving both the child and their parent or guardian.
These sessions are designed to explore focus, organisation, impulsivity, and emotional regulation.
5

Diagnostic report

A detailed clinical report is prepared by our team and finalised by a Psychiatrist with extensive experience and training in ADHD and autism.
6

Post-diagnostic feedback

You’ll be invited to a feedback session to review your results, understand your diagnosis, and receive tailored recommendations for ongoing support. If ADHD medication is recommended, we can provide a seamless service through our sister company, RTN Medical — a CQC-registered service offering titration and prescribing support under the same trusted RTN network.

ADHD Assessment FAQs

Who can have an ADHD assessment with RTN?
RTN offers ADHD assessments for both adults and children aged six and above. Our assessments are designed for anyone who may struggle with focus, organisation, impulsivity, or emotional regulation, and who wants clarity and guidance from experienced Neurodevelopmental Assessors. Every ADHD assessment is clinically overseen by a Psychiatrist, and each patient has a diagnostic outcome meeting with a qualified therapist, such as a Psychiatrist, Pharmacist, or GP, to review results, confirm the diagnosis, and discuss next steps for support.
Are appointments available online or in person?
Private assessments can take place online or in person at our Kent and Cheltenham clinics.
What happens during an ADHD assessment?
Each assessment is led by an experienced clinician using gold-standard diagnostic tools such as the DIVA, along with structured interviews and observations. Parents, caregivers, or partners may also be involved to build a complete picture of how ADHD affects everyday life.
Do you understand how ADHD presents differently across genders?
Yes. Our experts receive ongoing training to recognise how ADHD can look different across genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds. While boys often show more hyperactive traits, girls and women may mask their symptoms or experience more inattention, emotional overwhelm, or anxiety. RTN’s Neurodevelopmental Assessors are trained to identify these subtleties, ensuring every assessment reflects the individual’s true experience.
How soon can I start my assessment?
Once you book a private assessment, your process can begin within 24 hours. We don’t commit to fixed completion timeframes, as progress depends on completing pre-assessment forms and appointments.
What does “adheres to NICE guidelines” mean?
It means all our assessments follow the standards set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for diagnosing ADHD in both adults and children. This ensures your care meets the same clinical quality and safety standards used in NHS services.
What support is available after diagnosis?
Your report will include clear recommendations for next steps, including therapy, coaching, or medical review. Through RTN Therapies, we offer ADHD-focused Talking Therapies, while our sister company, RTN Medical, provides access to medication titration and prescribing if appropriate. This ensures continuity of care under one trusted team.
Can I pay for my assessment in installments?
Yes. Flexible payment options are available allowing you to spread the cost of your assessment.
